Is It Really True That There Are Only Seven Story Plots In The World?

When it comes to creating the most engaging content possible, having the right plotline is essential. This will help to draw the viewer in and keep them watching, but is it true that there are really only seven story plots in the world?

The idea was first developed in Christopher Booker’s 2004 book, The Seven Basic Plots, and was the result of over three decades of research. So what are the seven plots?

1)     Overcoming the monster

This is the plot that sees the protagonist defeat an evil antagonist. This is a very common theme and has been successfully used in a range of adverts, including this great one from Freeview:

2)     Rags to riches

Another common plot, this tells the tale of someone coming from nothing to achieve their goals. The Nike Ripple golf advert is a strong example of this:

3)     The quest

The quest plotline sees the protagonists set out on a journey to get to a specific location or secure an important item, overcoming many challenges on the way. One of the most memorable adverts that feature a quest is the now-iconic John Lewis Christmas ad:

4)     Voyage and return

A similar style, this type of plot sees the main character going on an incredible voyage to a foreign land, overcoming threats and returning with experience. Budweiser’s Super Bowl Ad from 2013 is a great example;

 5)     Comedy

This is a light-hearted plot that sees the central motif triumph over adverse circumstances, and the iconic Specsavers clips with John Cleese showcase this well:

6)     Tragedy

The opposite of comedy is a tragedy, which sees the character experience an unfortunate end. Cancer Research UK are very good at using this plot in their content:

7)     Rebirth

This is a plot that sees characters renewing themselves and (often) those around them as they are forced to change their ways, Samsungs what you can’t campaign positions technology as a tool to trigger rebirth in those it touches:

These 7 plots cover every aspect of human life, and every story will fall into one of these. Want to find out how you can incorporate them into your content? Get in touch today!
